Thoughts on The Wire

What is The Wire? HBO's The Wire aired from 2002 to 2008 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest television shows of all time. Set in Baltimore, the series primarily follows the city's drug scene from the perspectives of both the dealers and the police. However, each season also explores a different aspect of Baltimore's social and institutional structures, such as local government and politics, the shipping industry, the media, and the school system. My Experience with the Show The Wire is known for its slow burn pacing. Rather than relying on fast paced episodes and instant gratification, the show takes its time to immerse you into its world. The issue with this is that the beginning of the series moves pretty slowly compared to other shows. When I first started watching The Wire about 2 years ago I had a hard time getting into it because of its slower pace and I stopped watching. But as time went on, the characters and plot points still lingered in my mind, leading me to revisit the series. I'm grateful I did because the show rewards patience with amazing payoffs. Right now I’m on Season 3, which many consider the show’s best. What Makes it Great What stands out to me the most about The Wire so far is its multidimensional characters. No one is simply "good" or "bad," and the lines are very blurry on who we should be “rooting” for. Each character has a mix of strengths and flaws, making them feel incredibly real. The series also illustrates how all of these organizations are more similar than many would initially think, such as the hierarchical and chain of command aspects of both the police department and the drug network. Also, the plot doesn't offer easy solutions to the issues it presents, often showcasing the drawbacks and unintended consequences of actions (such as the "Hamsterdam" experiment for example). The Acting

The acting in The Wire is phenomenal. Some standout performances to me came from Michael Kenneth Williams (Omar Little) and Idris Elba (Stringer Bell). Also, a lot of well known actors got their big break on The Wire, such as Michael B. Jordan. Conclusion

The show tackles corruption and systemic issues, occasionally with raw, brutal, and violent scenes. While it may not be for everyone, if you enjoy thought-provoking dramas with complex characters, The Wire is a must-watch.

  1. Hi Winston! I'm personally not a big TV show fan in general, but The Wire sounds super interesting, I might have to check it out. I would love to see the show dissects the similar organizational structures between the police department and drug network--something we've been told throughout our entire lives should be complete opposites. Thank you for sharing, I'll for sure check out the show soon!

  2. Hi Winston,

This was super insightful as I have been looking for a new show to watch for a while now. I personally am a fan of antihero shows like The Sopranos and Breaking Bad, so I am interested in watching for the "blurred" characters in The Wire. Thanks for sharing!
