Real Estate Agent Assistant

Many people in the early stages of their career employ the strategy of seeking the mentorship of professionals who have already succeeded in their desired field. By absorbing the knowledge and insights from this relationship, people can store this information for the future when they venture out in their own career.

For me, this meant seeking the mentorship of accomplished individuals in the real estate industry, where I became an assistant to a real estate agent.

A real estate assistant is someone who helps agents in their various tasks and operations. This could come in the form of property research, analyzing market trends, developing marketing materials, listing preparation, and more.

Three words that best describe the duties of a real estate assistant are the following:

  • Designer

  • Investigator

  • Advertiser

Using these descriptions, I will describe how they relate to the job of a real estate assistant.

Designer

Real estate assistants take on the role of a designer in a variety of ways, particularly in preparing a home to go on the market. Examples include helping decide what color to paint a house, making decisions on whether the landscaping be refreshed or not, or checking appliances to make sure they are working properly. Real estate assistants will also aid in the staging process. This includes rearranging or replacing furniture, putting up pictures, and making sure the kitchen is clean and in order. The goal is to make the property as presentable as possible for photos, videos, showings, and open houses.

Investigator

Having the skills of an investigator is essential for real estate assistants. We are often asked to find comparable homes to determine the value of a property. This includes doing a deep dive into the MLS data of homes with similar size, amenities, and location. This research can also include obscure factors, such as if someone has died in the home, which will have an impact on the price of the home as well as the ability to get it sold.

Advertiser

Finally, real estate assistants aid in the production of marketing and advertising materials. This involves tasks such as creating postcards with images and descriptions of properties that are just sold or just listed. Other marketing tasks include emailing newsletters to a client database with up-to-date information on the real estate market, creating social media posts to galvanize interest, and if it is a luxury property, submitting the property to a luxury magazine, whether it is local or national.

Comparison

A real estate assistant has similarities to a surgical technician.

Surgical technicians aid surgeons by ensuring that the operating room is equipped with the proper sterile instruments and tools. Both positions sit behind an experienced professional, helping make sure the task is successful.

  1. Hey Winston! I really enjoyed reading your job description and experience in the real estate field. As someone with minimal knowledge on that industry, I learned a lot about specific tasks and responsibilities that come with it. You described three different roles that you took on as a real estate agent assistant - I'm curious which one was your strongest or your favorite?

  2. Hi Winston! I enjoyed reading your break down of your roles as an assistant. Out of curiosity, during your time as an assistant, were you primarily working with rental properties, or properties for sale? Is the level of involvement with the home's design relatively common in the real estate agent field? I am less familiar with the agent side of the industry so I was just curious what the common practice is! One thing I would recommend adding is a quick explanation of what MLS is as I do not believe it is a universally known term. Overall I liked the explanations you included in your post!
