job description final
Real Estate Agent Assistant
Many people in the early stages of their career employ the strategy of seeking the mentorship of professionals who have already displayed success in their desired field. For me, this meant seeking the mentorship of accomplished individuals in the real estate industry. Luckily, I did not have to go far as my mom has been a real estate agent for 27 years. Throughout most of my life she has asked me to help with her business by completing small tasks. However, I have become much more involved over the last few summers, as my interest in the industry has grown.
A real estate assistant is someone who helps agents in their various tasks and operations. Assistants alleviate some of the workload from agents, leading to a smoother and less stressful workplace. Their responsibilities could come in the form of property research, analyzing market trends, developing marketing materials, listing preparation, and more.
There are three descriptors that best describe the duties of this role:
Designer
Investigator
Advertiser
By using these three examples I will explain the role of a real estate assistant in more detail.
Designer
A real estate assistant works as a designer in the following areas:
Helping stage the home
Giving opinion on how to decorate
Real estate assistants step into the role of a designer during the staging process when preparing for a house to go on the market. This process involves tasks such as cleaning, replacing or rearranging furniture, putting up pictures, changing out bedding, and more. The goal is to make sure the home is as attractive as possible for potential buyers. We also get questions about things like picking paint colors, fixing up the landscaping, or figuring out if the furniture matches the home's style. For instance, an assistant might say it is not a good idea to put an ultra modern coffee table in a rustic-style home. That would be like playing opera music in a Nashville bar – it just doesn't mesh.
Investigator
Having the skills of an investigator is essential for real estate assistants in the following areas:
Researching comparable homes
Analyzing market trends
One of the most important parts of being a real estate agent is providing a recommendation on a home's value. One of the ways agents come to a conclusion on value is by analyzing the sales price of comparable homes. Real estate assistants come into play by helping conduct research on homes with comparable size, amenities, and location. We find this information through a database called the Multiple Listing Service, or MLS. Assistants also look for obscure factors, such as if someone has died in the home. We also will analyze trends in the market. Some examples of market trends we observe include migration patterns, such as people leaving California for more affordable states, the effect of interest rate hikes resulting in buyer hesitancy, and people opting to work from home instead of going to the office.
Advertiser
Lastly, the term advertiser can be applied to real estate assistants in the following ways:
Developing postcards
Emailing
Utilizing social media
Real estate assistants often aid in the production of marketing and advertising materials. This aid involves creating postcards that feature images and descriptions of the property, as well as contact information. Another marketing task for real estate assistants is emailing newsletters to a client database with up-to-date information about the market. We also contribute in the creation of social media posts to galvanize interest. For example, a real estate assistant might edit and post a video to Youtube that showcases a particular home.
Comparison
Surgical Technicians
Surgical technicians provide assistance to the surgeon by setting up the operating room with the proper instruments and tools, and making sure they have everything they need. Similarly, real estate assistants also support an experienced professional and aid them to make sure their operations run smoothly and successfully.

Hi Winston,
ReplyDeleteReally interesting insights on how a real estate assistance can be very diverse. The designer, investigator, advertiser breakdown was very interesting and helpful for analyst. Like others who's been analyst for an internship or job the stereotype is considered very boring and mondain. But I like how you made the job interesting and fun. Especially liked the opera in a Nashville bar analogy. Overall, very insightful and great post, cant wait to see what you post in the near future.
